The Definitive Portable DVD Player Glossary, Every Feature Explained

Like all electronic products, features for portable players are also full of jargon. As a reseller of portable DVD players it is important for you to understand these clearly for two reasons:

* Savvy consumers knows and understand electronics and are looking for an equally adept seller

* Novices need help understanding which product is right for them

Here is a list of terms which should help you go from zero knowledge to expert in no time:

** Disc Formats **

CD: Short for Compact Disc Read Only Memory (CD-ROM), is a pre-pressed compact disc that contains data accessible to, but not writable by, a computer.

CD-R: A CD-R (recordable) allows for content to be written once and read many times. This type of disc stores all types of media files.

CD-RW: This is a rewritable medium that allows for content to be written many times and read many times. The CD-RW can also be used to store different formats of content.

VCD: Also known as Video Compact Disc is a format for storing video on CDs, and is not dissimilar to a VCR in that you cannot skip chapters or view rich data, just fast forward and rewind.

SVCD: This stands for Super Video Compact Disk. This is a successor to the VCD and was meant to challenge the DVD format. Quality and storage capacity is superior to a VCD, but lower than the DVD.

DVD: Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Discs. They look like CDs but store six times more data and can display video in chapters.

DVD RW/ DVD+RW/ DVD-RW: These three terms essentially mean the same thing. These are rewritable DVDs. They can be rewritten close to a thousand times, making them very useful as backup media. The + and - and competing standards, though it is generally accepted that + is superior and therefore the industry standard for rewritable disks.

** Media Formats **

MPEG 1, 2, 3 & 4: These are compression standards for audio and video set by the Moving Pictures Export Group. The numerals refer to versions with MPEG 1 being the 1st and MPEG 4 being the latest. These standards apply across all transmission and distribution platforms.

MP4: This is another name of the MPEG 4-Part 14 standard created by the Moving Pictures Expert Group standards. This standard specifies compression for both video and audio. Commercially a number of manufacturers use MP4 on products that can playback both audio and video. However, this is misleading as MP4 products must be able to playback files with the extension .mp4.

WMA: Windows Media Audio is an audio data compression standard developed by Microsoft.

DiVX: This is a compression technique that converts lengthy video sequences into smaller parts without loosing too much detail. It uses the MPEG-4 compression standard.

XVID: The opposite of DiVX, is a compression technique and a direct competitor for DiVX. It also does video compression based on the MPEG-4 standard. The difference between the two is DiVX is proprietary while XVID is distributed under Gnu or is free to use.

MP3: Designed by the Moving Pictures Expert Group, this is a standard for audio files compression.

JPEG: This is a compression standard for photographs and is used by most digital cameras. Having this lets the user playback pictures from the camera on the portable DVD screen.

** External Ports **

AV In: Audio/Video input point to connect external devices like a video cam direct to the player

AV Out: Audio/Video output point for connecting DVD player to home TV, car system etc.

VGA Out: Video Graphics Array port, first introduced in computers now popular in portable devices, used to connect to LCD displays among others.

USB: Universal Serial Bus is one of the most common interface devices on a variety of platforms from computing to audio/video. With the USB you can hook up a whole host of devices to the DVD Player including mobile phones, laptops, computers, mp3 and MP4 players etc.

SD/MMC/MS Card Reader: Secure Digital/Multimedia Card and Memory Stick are all types of flash memory used in portable electronic devices from MP3/MP4 players, digital cameras, camcorders, mobile phones etc. A card reader for these devices ensures content on them can be played on the DVD player.

HDMI: High-Definition Multimedia Interface is an audio/video interface for transmitting uncompressed digital data.

It is the digital alternative to analog standards such as:

* RF

* Coaxial cable

* Composite video

* S-Video

* SCART

* Component video

* D-Terminal

* VGA

HDMI connects digital audio/video sources such as set-top boxes, Blu-ray Disc players, personal computers (PCs), video game consoles (such as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360), and AV receivers to compatible digital audio devices, computer monitors, and digital televisions

S-Video: Separate Video is an analog video signal that carries the video data as two separate signals, lumen (luminance) and chroma (color).

This differs from composite video which carries picture information as a single lower-quality signal, and component video which carries picture information as three separate higher-quality signals. S-Video carries standard definition video (typically at 480i or 576i resolution), but does not carry audio on the same cable.

** TV Encoders **

PAL: Phase Alternating Line is an analog color encoding system used in broadcast television is large parts of the world. DVDs with PAL encoding will only play on players that can decode this signal.

SECAM: Developed in France, it is an analog color encoding system for broadcast television. It is primarily used in France, parts of Eastern Europe some former French colonies.

NTSC: Developed in the USA, it is an analog color encoding system for broadcast television. Primarily used in the US.

DVB: Digital Video Broadcasting is (or will be) the industry standard for digital video in many countries around the world. It is used for satellite, terrestrial and digital terrestrial for portables (including mobile broadcasts).

ATSC: Advanced Television Systems Committee standard defines a digital broadcast standard for the US, Canada, Mexico and one or two other territories.

** Miscellaneous Terms **

Aspect Ratio: Aspect ratio is the fractional relation of the width of a video image compared to its height. The two most common aspect ratios in home video are 4:3 (also known as 4x3, 1.33:1, or standard) and 16:9.

Signal to Noise Ratio: Signal-to-noise ratio compares the level of a desired signal (such as music) to the level of background noise. The higher the ratio, the less obtrusive the background noise is.

Screen resolution: This refers to the number of rows and columns of pixels in the LCD display. So a screen with 800x600 resolution means it has 800 rows of pixels and 600 columns.

Bit rate: Bit rate is a measure of the rate of information content in a video stream. It is quantified using the bit per second (bit/s or bps) unit or Megabits per second (Mbit/s). A higher bit rate allows better video quality.

Modulation/Demodulation: This is a method of transferring digital data stream and converting it into an analog stream.

FFT Pattern: FFT refers to Fast Fourier Transform which is the algorithm used to unscramble the digital signals broadcast by television stations and broadcasters.

A FFT pattern is used in DVB-T transmissions and usually refers to signals being modulated for 2048, 4096, or 8192 carriers (2k, 4k, 8k mode, respectively).

FEC: Forward Error Correction is a system sending extra data with transmissions so that the television stations can quickly establish the cause of errors and fix them.

NES/SNES: Nintendo Entertainment System/Super Nintendo Entertainment System. These are gaming consoles released by Nintendo in the early 1990s. Many third-party devices come with these built-in, including portable DVD players.

ESP Protection: Electronic Skip Protection basically ensures playback of audio/video is skip free especially when mobile...say in a car.

** But why do YOU have to know all this? **

The digital consumer is aware of the interoperability between various digital formats and is generally looking for products that can double up in more than one function.

For example: a portable DVD player with a big enough screen to play back stills from a digital camera might mean the consumer will prefer to spend less on a camera with a big screen and use the portable DVD player instead for viewing pictures.

This is possible with the addition of the SD/MMC/MS card reader.

Similarly most family vacations today have a camcorder as a must have. For these consumers the ability to playback home videos on a larger screen is a must have.

A portable DVD player that accepts multiple video formats including NTSC, PAL SECAM etc. makes it more useful.

The ability to receive multiple TV input signals is essential given the changes taking place in broadcast technology. With Digital TV broadcast signals replacing analog across the world, it is essential that the portable DVD player have the required inputs to play the different TV formats.

Gaming is another "nice to have" feature on a family vacation.

The ability to either plug into existing gaming systems or in fact have a built-in gamer goes a long way in making a sale.

By knowing what the terms mean you are a long way towards knowing who to aim particular portable DVD players at and what features to play up and which points to ignore.

So get out there today, start studying up improve your listings and start selling to a wider market. Your bank balance will love you for it.

How To Troubleshoot DVD Drives Fast

You really enjoy those dvd movies and games and the last thing you need or want is to experience problems with your dvd drive.

To prepare for the possibility of having your dvd drive leaving you out in the cold one morning,we will dicuss problems that may cause dvd failure as well as the procedures you should take to correct these problems.

As with all drives,be sure to double check the failure. If the dvd drive will not read the dvd,try running another dvd in the drive.Make sure the dvd has no scratches and is clean.

Visually inspect the drive if the drive is external and if the drive is enternal, check the computer.Check to see if the computer has good ventilation to help keep it cool. Here are the common dvd problems with their solutions.

DVD DRIVE HAS NO POWER

First..For external drives that have no power, first check to see if anything or anyone has caused the power cord to become unplugged.Rule out the wall outlet by plugging in another device such as a radio and see if it plays.

Second...If you've proven the wall outlet to be good, but you still don't have power, check the surge protector for any signs of damage. If the surge protector is good, check the cord.

Third..If you're certain the surge protector or wall outlet is providing power, double check the cord by plugging it in a few times. If no power is present, you will have to replace the cord or the drive itself.

Internal dvd drives receive their power from the connector from the power supply.Try another connector to the drive. if the internal dvd drive still does not receive power after using another connector, the drive is faulty.

DRIVE HAS POWER BUT TRAY WON'T OPEN

You may experience the tray failing to open.Should this happen, press the button a couple times to see if it will open.If the tray fail to open, reboot your computer and try to open the tray.

When rebooting the system, notice the monitor to see if the drive is recognized by the computer. Some systems will not display installed hardware during bootup. If this is the case, you will have to access your BIOS to check if the dvd drive is being registered.

You can also try the manual eject button on the drive to get it to open.Use something very small but firm to press in the pinhole in front of the drive to open the tray.

Shut the computer off and unplug it.Use something like a long paperclip to insert in the pinhole to open the tray. The tray may open a couple inches and you can grab it with your fingers to open it completely.

DRIVE IS NOT RECOGNIZED BY WINDOWS

Be sure the operating system is recognizing the drive by clicking on My Computer.Windows XP will show "drives with removable storage".If your drive is present, highlight the drive, right click and select properties.Click on properties and you should see "this drive is working properly".

If you see another message such as "this drive is not working properly",you may be able to update the device driver. If the drive is not present in My computer, reboot the computer and access the cmos setup.

In the cmos setup, the dvd drive should be present. The drive may not be properly installed or one of the cables have become disconnected if the drive is missing

If you check the drive cables and are certain they are connected correctly,it may be that the data cable is faulty and the drive controller may be at fault. And we can't overlook the fact that the drive itself may be bad.

DRIVE HAS POWER BUT WILL NOT READ DVD

First..try another dvd since a dirty or scratched dvd may not play.If the new dvd fail to play as well, check to see if the operating system is recognizing the drive

Click on My Computer and highlight the dvd drive.Right click and select properties. The statement "This device is working properly" should be present. If not or you see another message, try to update the device driver.

In the My Computer screen, highlight the dvd drive, and select the Properties screen, select Drivers, and then select update device driver.

Another cause may be the Windows Registry is corrupt. You can use software utilities such as PC Bug Doctor to repair your registry. Download this free repair utility at http://www.pcbugdoctor.com/download.html.

To make a backup of your registry with Windows 98, just go to Start, select Run, enter scanregw and click OK. This will run Scanregw.exe.

Restore your registry in Windows 98 by typing scanreg / restore at the Dos Prompt. You can also use.Winrescue XP at http://www.superwin.com/index.htm is a neat little utility for backup and restore of Windows XP.

The dvd drive or writer is an awesome storage and data backup drive.Use it to the fullest to enjoy music, video, audio, and more.Understand everything about this drive before something goes wrong.

Should your audio die on you, check the dvd to be sure it is not dirty or damaged.Look at the audio cable for signs of looseness.Inspect this cable to be sure it is inserted in the connector completely and that is indeed inserted in the correct connector.

If you have a dvd drive, take the time to visit the support web site and download the latest device drivers or patches to keep your drive running at peak performance.

Long Term Data Storage - Choosing A Media Type

Choosing a long term data storage medium isn't as easy as you may think. You might imagine that the data could be burnt to CD, locked in a cupboard and that it would last forever however unfortunately this isn't the case. There are literally hundreds of suitably stored but physically decayed CD's from my teenage years which I could use as testament to that.

The question isn't as easy as you may think. You may imagine that the data could be burnt to CD, locked in a cupboard and that it would last forever however unfortunately this isn't the case. There are literally hundreds of suitably stored but physically decayed CD's from my teenage years which I could use as testament to that.

Therefore I've made a list of common formats one would usually consider for archiving a large amount of data so you can pick the most suitable one for your needs:

Hard Disk - When used on a regular basis a hard disk will typically last for around 5 years before it starts to decay and if it is being used as an infrequently accessed backup drive then we can assume that this can be at least doubled. Unfortunately degradation of the discs metallic surface, along with the inevitable seizing of parts would still occur over an extended period of disuse.

Optical - Standard optical media includes CD, DVD and BluRay. If choosing this media type ensure that you go for the highest grade money can buy you; a premium brand such as Taiyo Yuden may well last a decade but a more budget brand such as Memorex may only last half that time before the aluminium starts separating from the plastic.

Flash Media - Clearly you would expect that since Flash Media has no moving parts it would be ideal for a long term backup strategy. To an extent you would be right but the published data retention of a unused flash drive is only around 10 years and unfortunately once the device has reached the end of its life it is likely that it will go out in style, taking with it all of the information stored within.

Paper - Rather obvious this one - if left in a dark, dry place then paper will last for many decades; we recently recovered a number of newspapers from 1964 from below the flooring of a building we're doing up and aside from being a little yellowed they're in perfect condition. Primary problems do of course include having to find a safe place to store them along with the physical limitations relating to the amount and type of information that can be stored on sheets of paper.

Tape - You wouldn't have necessarily thought it but the humble tape has one of the best data rates available. With typical warranties lasting around 30 years with a life expectancy beyond that it's little wonder they continue to be used in banking and government sectors.

The primary downside is that although the tapes themselves are affordable and the capacities typically high (up to 1TB is relatively normal) the actual drives themselves are usually expensive.

Solid State Drive - An SSD uses solid-state memory (similar to that used in a flash drive) to store data and is most commonly used as a direct alternative to a hard drive, especially in notebooks where their small weight and size along with fast access times make them ideal. Unfortunately, they suffer the same major problems as flash drives in that JEDEC, the leading developer of standards for solid-state storage specify that data retention of an idle drive should only be considered to be around 10 years.

The Internet - Theoretically one of the most robust ways of backing up data, an online Internet server is typically backed up daily, monitored 24/7 and if a problem does occur with the hard drive containing your data a mirrored backup drive would take over with no down time.

If you were looking to store the data within your own lifetime the Internet would be a perfect storage medium however if looking to preserve the data for future generations then this method has some major flaws. For example, if you store your data on a free online storage account then the company either goes under or starts charging for the service then your data would be lost.

Magneto Optical - Magneto Optical is probably the most suitable removable data storage method although it is certainly a niche product. Originally introduced way back in the 1980's, MO drives are slow with fairly low capacities (current maximum is 9.1GB). With this slow speed however comes a ruggedness which results in 100 year data retention claims being commonplace.

Of course, when devising a long term archival strategy we assume that hardware will be available at the time that it needs to be played back. This is a serious consideration when we're talking about storing the data for best part of a century but in our own lifetime it won't necessarily be a problem - the first video camera my family owned used the 8mm Video8 cassette tapes and although 20 years down the line I don't own a compatible reader, I could obtain one if necessary.

Along with choosing the most suitable format, ensure that you keep copies on several different media types and in several different locations, thereby increasing your chances that one media type in one location will survive the test of time. If possible, check on the media every couple of years and transfer it to newer and more suitable media types.

Videos and Television on DVD, But Where is the Solutions Heading?

Movies, they have been all around to entertain us for more than a hundred several years. In excess of this time, technologies has enhanced to allow us to watch motion pictures at household through 8mm reel to reel, VHS and Betamax video clip tape, CD-ROM (VCD films) and at this time DVD format. The DVD format, emerged informally as "digital versatile disc" close to 1995. Analysis by Sony/ Philips and Toshiba close to this time came from hunting for choices to CD-ROM and VHS/Beta tapes as a substitute.

DVD has end up being a sought after format for not just videos but for numerous platforms of media now, made use of in formats like DVD gamers for films and Television sequence, consoles like the Playstation and XBOX, and for Private Computers (which are also chosen for storage, the DVD-R +R, DVD-RW & DVD-RAM formats).

Given that 2005, Sony and Toshiba have again gone head to head with Bluray (Sony) and HDDVD (toshiba) and with people of you previous sufficient to do not forget the Betamax (Sony) and VHS (Toshiba) it is reminisce of the format wars of 25 odd a long time again.

For most, these two new formats are generation II of DVD, Bluray has a a little bigger potential than HDDVD (around 30 Gb in contrast to DVD of around four.7Gb) and utilizes a thinner blue laser on gamers (substantial red lasers are utilised on players that play cd and dvds) and HDDVD even though a bit much less ability than Bluray (about 25Gb) uses a thinner red laser and is much simpler to manufacture in vegetation that make conventional dvd discs. This presents new matters for the buyer. Which do I choose? What are the merits and down sides? What is the cost?

Holographic DVD is also an extra emerging format that appears like finding commercial release in about 2009 and has storage hunting to 200Gb and upwards. Thats about fifty percent a million MP3's, or about 400 several hours of Common Definition video clip or 80 hrs of High Definition video. Whew !

Traditional definition video clip ? Huge definition video clip? What the heck is this you request. It is how a photograph or video playback is exhibited on a screen and that display screen preferences to be capable of Great Definition playback (Television, rear projection. LCD or Plasma), Tv and Video/ DVD has played again in Regular Definition for about the last fifty decades. It is approximate to 800 x 600 DPI on a computer system display, where by Substantial Definition is approximate to 1280 x 1024 DPI on a personal computer screen.

Digital download (the on-line and wireless online), some other rising technological innovation not just for viewing video on pcs, but for cell phones as clearly. Cable Tv, TIVO, Digital or broadband Television (IPTV), certainly nevertheless much more technologies on the Tv front vying for your tough earned dollar. Most customers in the USA already have these three technologies.

Perplexed ? Thats understandable. Its 2007 and we have not had greater to decide on from to get Tv or movie amusement than any other time previous to it. We don't know what know-how will be out there in five, seven or 10 ages, but 1 factor is sure. No make a difference how high quality the tech is, the ideal will be the a single that individuals wish to use the most...

PowerPoint to DVD Creator

Microsoft PowerPoint has greatly adjusted the way in which academic and organisation presentations are constructed. Suppose you have to have to make PowerPoint DVDs, aside from currently being relatively well known, the most typical causes that end users want to melt away PowerPoint slides to DVD are usability, portability, and storage. Since DVD is speedy being the desired video format for all varieties of shopper programs, as very well as laptop or computer peripherals, conserving ppts to DVD can make smart sense for storing and sharing them with others. Computer-built DVDs can be demonstrated on other PCs that assistance DVD or on buyer DVD gamers. (and, of training course, design some for your unique archiving and enjoyment).

Right here I endorse presenters to use the PowerPoint DVD authoring and burning software program. What I suggest by this is that as a substitute of quickly packing their presentation to a CD or DVD and thus needing to transfer or set up it to a different laptop in an emergency, burn up a a fact DVD motion picture disc with most of your subject matter and narration document, so that your boss or your colleagues can indicate it on a conventional DVD player or go away it behind for a consumer or audience following the clearly show.

The DVD film disc can contain an interactive menu connected to any video clip you want to present, and after you output your PowerPoint slides as even now photographs (File > Help save As and improve the file form to BMP, JPG or TIF), you can import these into the DVD as slideshows. And with DVD/VCD, you can attach music and narration to accompany your slides present, which will seriously add to the ambience.

A disc burned properly like that in a DVD burner will play through most consumer DVD drives and is uncomplicated to set up linked to a laptop computer watch or even a significant-screen Television.

A great number of courses will enable you to produce and burn off this sort of a PowerPoint DVD disc. At the low finish you will find ProDVD's PowerPoint DVD Maker. If you want a way more useful tool, I endorse Wondershare PPT2DVD (http://www.ppt-to-dvd.com)

Network Attached Storage - Under the hood

A Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a type of storage space system that may be linked to a data network. A NAS is useful for storage relevant to non mission-critical data. It is less costly and simpler to maintain compared to a Storage Area Network (SAN) but does not quite deliver the performance a powerful organization can acquire from a SAN.

File transfer protocols supported by NAS include Network File System, Common Internet File System, File Transfer Protocol, etc. NAS servers give versatility in terms of connection to the network; this can be done either via the Ethernet or a fiber channel network. Nowadays you can even get wireless 802.11 NAS devices. The good thing about NAS devices lies in their simpleness, they could be created using virtually any hard drive technology however they are usually developed using Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI). NAS devices may also be used for many other storage techniques such as magnetic tape, CD, and DVD.

NAS offers the following advantages -

1.Quicker access to saved data via the LAN.

2.Lower costs since the RAID arrays are a part of the LAN.

3.Straightforward to set up, are usually installed and operating in under half an hour.

These types of properties of NAS storage plus its low cost of ownership ensure it is well suited for SMBs. A twin benefit of Raid 5 NAS is the fact that it enables administrators to either enhance or consolidate the storage infrastructure. Storage growth is practically unlimited as one is free of the restriction of storage capabilities of individual servers as well as the amount of drives they are able to hold. At the same time, one NAS set-up is good enough to replace several data file servers that are operating separately, this leads to consolidation. NAS is often run on commonly accessible os's for example Windows. NAS status could be checked out via everywhere on the LAN, this gives storage administrators a chance to diagnose problems and alter NAS configurations when required.

NAS system performance is dependent upon the drive support, the number of disks in use as well as the overall capacity. SATA hard disks that offer excellent low-cost mass storage are most preferred. SCSI hard disks are also available. Because the NAS utilizes the LAN for data transfer often there is a chance of a bottleneck developing some time over the LAN, generally it's the network interface that creates problems. If utilizing a NAS, search for products which support Gigabit Ethernet for speedy data transfer as well as numerous connections so that network load is spread and interface redundancy is supplied.

When purchasing a NAS solution keep security in mind and check out vendors that include native encryption using the system.

Is DVD Storage An Attractive Alternative For Your Computer Backup?

If you have a computer for home use or for your business and don't take comprehensive backup for full protection then you are in the danger-zone. Maybe you do not take any backup at all.

You can find in Windows a basic backup utility which are installed during the installation.

I should say for all Windows, but in fact it is not included during the installation of Windows XP Home Edition.

It is as if Microsoft thinks that data protection is not necessary for home computers and computers used by small businesses.

It is true that hard drives are becoming less prone to hard disk crashes.

But, if you consider not only hard disk crashes, but also virus infection, theft plus other treats, then you realize the importance of implementing a full-proof backup strategy for your computer.

Today many computers are equipped with a DVD burner, yet most do not use it to manage their vital data backup. The amount of data you can store on a single DVD is several Giga Byte.

There are many types of backup you can make.

Here are the steps that I take myself to fully secure my data against data loss:

1. Disk image backup.

I use a disk image backup software and make a complete image backup of the disk on consecutive DVDs.

I also create an emergency rescue CD.

If I have a hard disk crash Ill use this emergency CD to boot from.

But, first I have to install and setup a new hard disk that is working.

Then I can recreate the data directly back from this backup stored on the DVDs.

This work is made fast and without the need to spend time installing both the operation system and the backup software.

Everything is instead copied directly into the hard disk from the DVDs.

2. Full hard disk backup.

I also use a data backup software and create a full backup of the hard disk on consecutive DVDs.

This is a standard disk backup. With this backup I'm able to restore any files and/or folders.

I can also move the data to another computer.

3. Regular scheduled backup of files and folder.

Here I use the same software product I use for the full disk backup. I make with this software regular schedule backups of the files and folders I work with.

In my case they include My Documents, Outlook emails and other files that are modified over time.

I do this by keeping a permanent rewritable DVD inside the DVD burner.

I then rotate a number of DVDs for this purpose so I can keep copies away from the computer.

Whenever I install important new programs from the Internet or I make other major changes to my system Ill also create a new disk image backup and a full hard disk backup.

You should use a DVD burner that is built for rewritable DVDs.

Unfortunately there are several competing DVD standards on the market.

The DVD-R, DVD-R and DVD-RAM standards supports DVDs which only can be written to once and cant be reused and those standards should be avoided.

The DVD player should instead support at least one rewritable DVDs standard.

Either DVD-RW or DVD+RW.

Conclusion:

I use regular schedule backup to backup the data files I work with on a daily basis.

Ill make a disk image backup so that in case of a hard disk failure I will be back in business fast.

I also create a full disk backup so that I will be able to restore individual files or folders. It makes it also possible to move the data to another computer.
